Selfie

2017

"At one point I sighted the earth with my thumb—and my thumb from that distance fit over the entire planet. I realized how insignificant we all are if everything I'd ever known is behind my thumb."

— Apollo 8 astronaut Jim Lovell reflecting on seeing Earth for the first time from the first manned orbit around the moon in December 1968.

Selfie is a different kind of self-portrait created using a reflective print that acts like a black mirror. The camera has zoomed far out beyond the Earth's atmosphere, allowing the viewer to see themselves, the world, and everything they've ever known; all in one frame.

Reflective dye sublimation print on aluminium.
Mounted in a black 25mm (1 inch) aluminium tray frame.
33.7x 21.5cm (13.3 x 8.5 inches).
