Astronomical features in Ocean of Images, the 30th anniversary of MoMA's New Photography showcase.

Probing the effects of an image-based post-Internet reality, Ocean of Images examines various ways of experiencing the world: through images that are born digitally, made with scanners or lenses in the studio or the real world, presented as still or moving pictures, distributed as zines, morphed into three-dimensional objects, or remixed online. The exhibition’s title refers to the Internet as a vortex of images, a site of piracy, and a system of networks. Ocean of Images presents bodies of work that critically redefine photography as a field of experimentation and intellectual inquiry, where digital and analog, virtual and real dimensions cross over. These artists explore contemporary photo-based culture, specifically focusing on connectivity, the circulation of images, information networks, and communication models.

PRESS RELEASE

Bruce Silverstein is pleased to present Semi-Automatic, the first solo show of Mishka Henner’s work in the US. Selected for the upcoming 30th anniversary of MoMA’s New Photography exhibition, Henner’s work combines elements from mass media, public datasets, and internet culture to address a range of charged cultural and economic subjects.

Henner has described himself as an aggregator of data and images, often producing works that are dystopian in tone. Citing the influence of writers such as J. G. Ballard, Jean Baudrillard, and Michel Houellebecq, he writes, "America continues to dominate the European imagination. The optical superstructure it has helped create ensnares us but can also illuminate us.”

Many of Henner’s projects involve extensive documentary research combined with the meticulous construction of imagery from materials sourced online. In this exhibition, key works from his screen-based output over the past six years are presented alongside more recent works. In each, the free and fluid circulation of images is set against underlying economic systems. Prints, books, paintings and video works addressing state censorship; the sex trade; the art market; and the silver, beef and oil industries are brought together for the first time.

Born in 1976 in Brussels, Belgium, Henner moved to the UK in 1984. He holds a Master’s degree from Goldsmiths College in London and in 2013 was awarded the Infinity Award for Art by the International Center of Photography. He was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in the same year and in 2014 was on the shortlist for the Prix Pictet for his large-scale works focusing on landscapes carved by the beef and oil industries of America.

Henner’s works have featured in large historical surveys at the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Fotomuseum Winterthur. He has also participated in contemporary surveys at the McCord Museum Montreal, Les Rencontres d'Arles, and the International Center of Photography. Henner's works are in numerous public collections, including the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Tate Collection of Artists' Books.

Print-on-demand book publishing has been at the heart of Henner's practice, producing more than 12 books since 2010.

INTERVIEW IN ELEPHANT MAGAZINE

'In Manchester you go and see people and the TV’s just on permanently,’ he continues. ‘It’s like a family member. You’re having a conversation with someone and there’s this massive TV that’s just talking to nobody—it’s comforting, it’s like grandma sat in the corner of the room. You ask if you can turn it off, and people say: “Oh no, we can’t.”'

"Representations of animals are now omnipresent: on billboards, in newspapers, magazines and television programs and of course hundreds of thousands of images to be reloaded every day on the net. People seem obsessed with animal images. At the same animals are related to conservation programs, genetic experiments, or legal issues often the subject of public controversy. During the last two decades, many artists have the human attitude towards animals repeatedly questioned. Old forms of representation be revised to consider not only the relationship between humans and animals new, but also their own creative practice.

An exhibition by the Fotomuseum Winterthur. Accompanying this is a richly illustrated catalog with essays by Heather Davis, Duncan Forbes, Ana Teixeira Pinto and Slavoj Žižek appears by Spector Books, Leipzig.

Beastly / Beastly is an exhibition of the Fotomuseum Winterthur and curated by Duncan Forbes, Matthias Gabi and Daniela Janser."
